The Beach. Never Enough Time.

Song of the Day is...."Time Won't Let Me Go" by The Bravery.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spKOib_D5YY

Happy lazy Sunday.  Sundays are always a time to ponder your week to come and what has occurred in the last week, for me anyways.  This song is a great representation of so much that has happened to me this last week. Celebrating another week of sobriety and spent a lot of time in a bar last night with some high school classmates. Such a surreal night. The only thing I was thankful for most was that I was sober and remember every conversation, I cut off the night when I should have, didn't act like an idiot and felt "intact" the whole night. All in all, a success.  However, my mind and me are on a mission, a journey together trying to understand each other more and more. I know it sounds strange but this song "Time Won't Let Me Go" is very appropriate for the state I am in.

Today I am driving to the ocean. I need to be around it, walking on it, in it, seeing it.  It will make my week worth it and the week ahead exciting and doable.  I just feel...quiet I guess and contemplative, and excited and a little nervous and sometimes scared but always ready. I know I am where I am supposed to be but it's about handling things with grace and positivity. Speaking of The Beach, I was thinking about The Beach movie and the soundtrack. What a great one! Remember Moby? Don't forget him! He's really an incredible American electronica musician.  I have always admired him and he has come out with more work recently. The Beach soundtrack was a monumental one at the time and I think it's a great one. I think I will be listening to it on the way. Artists include:  Brian Eno, William Orbit, Unkle, Barry Adamson, and Moby while even All Saints' 'Pure Shores' (remember them?) and Sugar Ray's 'Spinning Away' are bright, while Moby, Leftfield, and UNKLE provide groovy, moody beats (as Entertainment Weekly effortlessly describes it).  I am looking forward to just that feeling. So I will dust it off and give it a worthy listen today.

I'm not sure what your plans are but I hope this day finds you well. I have so much to do and I have had Scarlett for a whole week now which has been amazing but I look around and just see our disasters around the house from a week of awesomeness.  On top of cleaning this ginormous house, my job is to stay on top of work, school, sleep, driving, money, fun, people, myself, etc. It's a lot and the consistent complaint I have every single day is there is never enough time. I don't love that feeling but it is true, the way I feel about it. Time is certainly slipping away.  My whole week has revolved around time, even choosing to rent True Grit (what's the last line in the film? Time just gets away from us). Yep. As a classmate said last night, "I guess I haven't seen you in 11 years which makes me feel really old". It's true that we're getting older. Even the pictures Scarlett took of me this week showed a lot of lines in my face that are new and reflect my transformation. I do love them. I have no idea why all of this makes me think of The Arcade Fire but I will definitely pay attention to them today. They allow me to reflect on my youth and where I've come as well. If you disagree, just listen to "Neighborhood #1" on Funeral. What a feeling I get when I listen to it. The whole album for that matter. One of the best.

Be good. God speed. Enjoy yourself. Love yourself. Put on your favorite album today and just intoxicate yourself with it. It's the best Sunday activity there is.

Pool Parties, Daft Punk, and Chet.

Song of the day is...."Face to Face" by Daft Punk.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKJfJMMsqX4

It's a beautiful day here in Portland and I am stoked to be alive. Living a sober fun-filled existence is possible, more so than ever before. I feel like Daft Punk has to be an ultimate summer band for me. It makes me feel "old school" and free. So today there will be much Daft Punk involved.  What is up with electronica frenchmen? I feel like Air is the melancholic side of me and Daft Punk is the party side of me. They've been around forever (since way back in '87) and continue to make exceptional tunes. They're like the U2 of electronic pop. I dig it. As they say, their influences are The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones. Wha? Guess that's who bred to make a Daft Punk baby. Again, I dig.

Pool parties are the best, aren't they? When was the last time you went to one? What sucks is that we no longer live with our parents where we can house hop to friends' places and eat their parents' food and lay by their pool without jobs. Ah the good ol' days. Fortunately for me, I have a friend in her 30's who has a pool. Lucky! So here we are adults, still playing like kids, at our own pools. Love it. So today, I'm hoping to blast some Vampire Weekend, Two Door Cinema Club, Spoon, and of course the beloved makes-me-feel-young-love-to-party-i-don't-care-about-anything band, MGMT.

Last night on my commute, I had listened to everything under the sun. In fact, when I am in the car for four hours and I go a little loony, I usually just turn on a radio station, any radio station, and play Name That Tune within the first 30 beats or so. Lame I know but it passes the time. So yesterday I think I had heard everything from Ms. Insecurity, low self-esteem, I hate myself Amy Winehouse to I Love Life but more importantly I love smoking gonj the laid back I just want to do nothing and be happy  Bob Marley. So I couldn't figure out my mood, and moody I have been. I have been emotional and pathetically small. Not in a serious sense, just a pathetic one. I've been feeling like my inner voice is just a whiny bastard these days. What I tapped into and finally found pure happiness in was Chet. Chet Baker is one of my most ultimate favorite artists of all time and I know I have made the reference to the album "My Funny Valentine" as being like the best album EVER but I actually mean it. I listened to it twice on the way back up, pretending that it was ME on stage playing the trumpet and over to the piano and over to the brush drums, like I was a one-man band. It was the most enjoyable thing to listen to, especially as dipping down into the valley and over the hills to home, where I see the snowy mountain in the background with an orange glow over the buildings sparkling atop the river reaffirming an amazing decision to move here. With my little one asleep in the back, I feel so much at peace with Chet on the radio and the sun on my cheek.

With that sappy blog, I bid you all a wonderful Saturday full of surprises and happiness and inner peace. Here's to Chet and all of the other men in my life who give me the tingles.

Nostalgia and The Stars.

Song of the Day is...."Elevator Love Letter" by indie rock group, Stars.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xU7KGcrD_gc

Ah today is a thinking day. Waking up to work with coffee in hand, watching the sun come up was exhausting in this strange "college up all night paper writing sort of way" and I started to contemplate my life over the last 10 years. After work, I immediately set to work on organizing some older albums and digging for buried treasure through heaps of boxes in the garage of my confined abode.

I found some winners. And I found some big-time losers (was that really the "Hope Floats" soundtrack in there and oh god really, "Titanic"?) but all in all I previewed some Doves, Betty Serveert, Stars, Flaming Lips, Fish, and my entire collection of Billie Holiday CD's. My oh my it's been a morning.

I think with the weather switching off just to give me a little break (I'm not a huge fan of heat), I have had more time to think and less to just feel or go. I have changed more this two-thousand eleventh year of our lord than ever before, especially in the last two months. What a transformation. I think it is normal to want to unlock the past and figure out what is happening for the future (wow, that was cheesy). See how in my head I am today? Ick.

For those of you who were HUGE Cure fans like myself in high school and college, I find that The Bravery makes me feel like they used to make me feel. It's pretty great because whenever they come on on my playlist, I think for a second I'm listening to Robert Smith but then the lyrics and the instruments are used in such a modern way, that I feel I really relate more to it. If you all have not heard of them, please check them out. They are an NYC-based post-punk revival/New Wave band, hence why I get that Robert Smith feel. They are incredible and worth your while. As my friend says to me, "Of course everyone has heard of The Bravery. They were on "Yes Man" and the trailer for "No Strings Attached". I had no idea. So if that is where you have heard of them, great. Keep listening.

Enjoy your gray day or not (depending on where you are) and take this day to reflect. It's an awesome feeling to see how far you have come. Music has been here with me every step of the way.

Sunshine, Empire of the Sun, and Son Volt

Sun, sun, sun...what can I say but Portland is finally happy! Scarlett has been OBSESSED with Empire of the Sun's song "Walking on a Dream" and can't stop listening to it. Yesterday she watched the video 13 times before we left the house! So...

Song of the Day is...."Walking On A Dream" by Empire of the Sun.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eimgRedLkkU

As you all know, the country fair is coming up. Scarlett will be leaving tomorrow to hang out with the hippies and get dirty with her dad. I decided that in terms of my contribution to the Country Fair, I would choose my song of the day as...."Windfall" by Son Volt.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYoidn4QRMI

In other news, Scarlett has realized that her favorite artist, Sia, will be in town in August so I will be purchasing tickets to see her August 16th. Scarlett is very excited. She was screaming with excitement and then got quiet and asked, "Mama, will it be past my bedtime?" Oh this will be fun. It will be at the Wonder Ballroom. Looks like three amazing female artists will be lighting up the summer night and we are very much looking forward to it.

With much needed sunshine, also comes YARD SALES and FRESH PRODUCE PICKING! While we were out two days ago at Sauvie Island, we stopped by a yard sale that looked enormous and amazing. However, it was about 3 acres of crap. Just sheer useless crap. So as I'm sifting through the nonsense, I see that they are selling CD's. I giggled inside thinking I would find some real duds. What did I find? At least ten diamonds in the rough including The Breeders "Last Splash" which is an album that has changed my life and I listen to monthly. I found Dinosaur Jr., Toad the Wet Sprocket, Belly, Counting Crows "August and Everything After", and the biggest find for me was Chet Baker's "My Funny Valentine" which is a CD rare in print and is one of my top ten albums of all time. I couldn't believe it. I pulled them all out and gave them back to the owner and told her to just hang onto them. I walked away with a rare "Flaming Lips" EP that I have NEVER heard of and Annie Lennox's "Medusa". What a fantastic surprise.

We topped the day off with sundaes at Ruby Jewel, the best ice cream shop in Portland in my opinion. Located on Mississippi across Amnesia Brewery, you will smell the most amazing smell of fresh waffle cones being made. What a great ending.

Enjoy the sun!!! Scarlett and I are going to be very lazy and lay around in the sun doing absolutely nothing today. What an intense, fun-filled weekend we had! Have a great "short" week everyone! And keep rocking awesome tunes! It makes everything better. I mean everything.

Blues Festival, Joy Formidable, Gray Sundays

Song of the day is...."Whirring" by Joy Formidable.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2BUEzdjfpY

I have really fallen in love with a few bands lately but right now, besides Metric, Joy Formidable are my other favorite "leading chick band" where I get those girly lyrics and hard core rock. Some of it slow, some of it not - just really fitting my mood right now.

The Blues Festival was a success. I can't believe how it is a free event with suggested donations. Why would you NOT check it out? I have no idea. It was a fun way to spend the latter half of the hot day and Scarlett seemed to really enjoy it also. Bring water, a blanket, and snacks. Food is expensive, as I'm sure you could've guessed.  Today with it being a much cooler day, it might be more enjoyable but I can't handle the crowds more than one day.

Some music choices for the rest of the day will include:  The Raconteurs, Margot and the Nuclear So-Sos, Ida, and The Boxer Rebellion. Some rock with some soft folky pop stuff. Perfect for a gray lazy Sunday. Off to friend's house for brunch and really looking forward to it. It precedes a great hike to the top of Mt. Tabor with my little one for a picnic at the top.  Enjoy some music today and I will keep sharing some thoughts.

In other news: Just got an email from Wilco with an announcement of releasing some fun new songs for the holiday weekend! Really excited about checking it out. Just love them. Anyway, you should as well, if you have some time.

The link is:  http://wilcoworld.net/roadcase/

Have a wonderful end of your weekend. I will be checking in later with some other news. Summer is here and there are so many concerts, albums to listen to in the sun, great activities, and songs that keep me going.

Love you all!

Edgefield Anniversary, Lazy Summer Days, Blues, and Picking Yourself Up.

Song of the day is...."Polar Opposites" by Modest Mouse.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCf4YzlSPy0

Today is Edgefield's 100th Anniversary and to kick off the summer (officially now for us Portlanders), Modest Mouse will be performing. You won't want to miss it. If you can still get tickets, please do yourself a favor and check it out. I have seen them roughly five or six times in concert and never disappointing. Never. What an amazing band. Truly. And Edgefield is located in beautiful Troutdale in a pristine location, best known for their country-side environment, great beer, and a plethora of incredible bands coming to play all summer long.

Summer is officially here in Oregon and with that, I have built a pretty eclectic mix in my life for the season. I tend to pick songs that feel like me or feel appropriate for the time/place/weather, etc. So I would have to say my two favorite artists for the summer are...Foster The People and Portugal. The Man. I am very much impressed by the way these two bands have come out this year in a whole new way and have been kicking off alternative top 40 lists across the nation and have been picked to represent a slew of amazing artists at many concert festivals including the upcoming INCREDIBLE festival, Lollapalooza in Chicago this summer. What a lineup. Coldplay will be headlining while other newer bands like Naked And Famous will get a huge break from the indie community as well as bringing much deserved attention to the Portland-based group Portugal. The Man, whom I have personally nominated as Best Album of The Year.

This week was a big one in terms of being burned out for me. Just having finished up a wedding, many weekends of social commitments, and a week of falling off the wagon a couple of times while trying to get my ass to class was difficult. So today I will be listening to a lot of Phoenix, my #1 band for turning myself around and allowing space for reflection. I'm such a hippie. I need to just get off the computer right now and take my little muffinhead to Sarah Jane's pool to eat popsicles and lounge like lizards. I'll sneak in some Starfucker and Vampire Weekend to kick off a great week off ahead.

DON'T FORGET TO CHECK OUT THE WATERFRONT BLUES FESTIVAL. Sounds like a lot of fun. Beer gardens, views of the water, people everywhere, 80 degrees and sunny with amazing local and nationally recognized blues artists. Have fun and be safe!

HELP! i'm alive, red hot chili peppers, and MGMT

Song of the day is.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=we_czU9sJ3g

Help I'm Still Alive by Metric.  Long night last night. Not loving today. About to get in the car for four hours and I can hardly stand up.

Had a discussion with someone last night by "Higher Ground" by Red Hot Chili Peppers and what album it is on. I had no idea there were a couple of albums before "Mother's Milk" that I was not really privy to. So there goes my "I think I know so much about this band" mentality.

Also if I hear one more person bitch about MGMT's album "Congratulations" I'm going to shoot them. Totally love the album. No, it is not Oracular Spectacular. And frankly, nothing will ever come close to being such a consistently bitchin' album but they are apples and oranges. The kids got lucky when their first album was so absolutely successful and set an excruciatingly high bar. But I have found many songs on Congratulations to be worth my listening time. Love it. So there.
